Rather than weakness, forgiveness is a reflection of strength. It expresses the power of liberation.
Surrendering to the inclinations of anger and revenge reflects a lack of willpower and self-control, and a breakdown of constructive priorities and perspective. It reflects a situation where an individual is too weak to break free from the painful experiences of the past.
It takes courage and willpower to resist and overcome the temptations of anger and revenge. And it requires foresight and creative imagination to envision the value of being released from the controlling grip of painful memories and desires for revenge.
“Forgiveness is a virtue of the brave.” (Indira Gandhi)
“ “When you hold resentment toward another, you are bound to that person or condition by an emotional link that is stronger than steel. Forgiveness is the only way to dissolve that link and get free.” (Katherine Ponder)
“I think the first step is to understand that forgiveness does not exonerate the perpetrator. Forgiveness liberates the victim. It’s a gift you give yourself.” (T.D. Jakes)
