Appreciating Human Diversity

“If man is to survive, he will have learned to take a delight in the essential differences between men and between cultures. He will learn that differences in ideas and attitudes are a delight, part of life’s exciting variety, not something to fear.”

Gene Roddenberry

When it comes to cultural diversity and differences of beliefs, tolerance is usually thought of as a protective and defensive principle. It upholds the rights of people and seeks to protect them from being treated disrespectfully and punitively simply because of their differences.

However, tolerance also represents a positive affirmation of the creative value of cultural diversity.

Cultural diversities and differences of beliefs are essential and creative conditions that enrich human experience and contribute to progress. Embracing and accepting differences of ideas, beliefs, and lifestyles are valuable practices in themselves, and are worthy of being appreciated and respected.

“Human diversity makes tolerance more than a virtue; it makes it a requirement for survival.”  (Rene Dubos)

“Tolerance is accepting differences in other people. It is thinking ‘It is OK that you are different from me.’” (Cynthia Amoroso)

“If civilization is to survive, we must cultivate the science of human relationships – the ability of all peoples, of all kinds, to live together, in the same world at peace.” (Franklin D. Roosevelt)
