When you are a good listener, you gain people’s appreciation by showing that you are interested in hearing and understanding what they have to say. Also, you may importantly learn something by paying attention to what they say.
Becoming a good listener is an artful skill that is not always easy to develop, as good listening involves patience, maintaining attentiveness and overcoming common mental distractions that occur while others are talking to you.
For example, good listening would be demonstrated when you continuously pay attention to someone who is speaking, and thereby you do not allow yourself to become distracted by matters external to what they are saying; this would also include letting that person know that you are in fact listening to them by looking directly at them while they are talking.
Getting Personal
Have you ever spoken with someone, only to discover they were not paying attention to what you were saying, and probably understood very little about what you said? Give an example. What was the result, and how did you feel?
