Better to Have Loved and Lost
” ‘Tis better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.” (Alfred Lord Tennyson, 19th century English poet)

As is all too well known, romantic love can be risky. It can sometimes end poorly or tragically, and may result in deep feelings of loss, disappointment, heartache, and even resentment.

Drawing on your own experiences and beliefs, do you agree that it is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all?

For example, which of the following statements do you most strongly identify with?

a. “Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” ― Dr. Seuss

b. “In the arithmetic of love, one plus one equals everything, and two minus one equals nothing.” ― Mignon McLaughlin

c. “A broken heart is just the growing pains necessary so that you can love more completely when the real thing comes along.” ― J.S.B. Morse

Getting Personal

Briefly explain your choice to the question above, and if applicable, cite a personal example.

“What the heart has once owned and had, it shall never lose.” (Henry Ward Beecher, American social reformer, clergyman)

“To love and win is the best thing. To love and lose, the next best.” (William Makepeace Thackeray, British novelist, poet)
