How Emotionally Competent Are You?

“75% of careers are derailed for reasons related to emotional competencies, including inability to handle interpersonal problems; unsatisfactory team leadership during times of difficulty or conflict; or inability to adapt to change or elicit trust.” (The Center for Creative Leadership)

In your own words, what is the main idea of the quote above by the non-profit leadership organization The Center for Creative Leadership?

“If you can’t explain it simply, you don’t understand it well enough.” (Albert Einstein)

Getting Personal

Have you ever, either from personal experience or from the observation of others, seen someone derail their chances for a successful outcome due to their lack of competence in controlling or guiding their emotions? If so, who was the person, what was the situation, and which emotional lack of competency was involved?

.

“Emotional intelligence can be broken down into several key components:

  1. Self-awareness: This involves the ability to recognize and understand your own emotions, including their causes and impact on your thoughts and behaviors.
  2. Self-regulation: Self-regulation involves the ability to manage and control your emotional responses, particularly in challenging or stressful situations. It also includes the capacity to adapt to changing circumstances and maintain emotional composure.
  3. Social awareness: Social awareness involves being attuned to the emotions and needs of others, as well as being able to empathize with their experiences.
  4. Relationship management: This component of emotional intelligence focuses on effectively managing interpersonal interactions, including communication, conflict resolution, and collaboration. It encompasses skills like active listening, conflict resolution, and the ability to build and maintain positive relationships.

Research has shown that individuals with higher emotional intelligence tend to be more successful in their careers and relationships. It’s important to note that emotional intelligence can be developed and improved over time through self-awareness and practice.” (ChatGPT)

INSIGHTS for SUCCESS

When dealing with people, remember you are not dealing with creatures of logic, but creatures of emotion. (Dale Carnegie)

“Emotional Intelligence is a way of recognizing, understanding, and choosing how we think, feel, and act. It shapes our interactions with others and our understanding of ourselves. It defines how and what we learn; it allows us to set priorities; it determines the majority of our daily actions. Research suggests it is responsible for as much as 80% of the “success” in our lives.”  (J. Freedman)

“In the last decade or so, science has discovered a tremendous amount about the role emotions play in our lives.  Researchers have found that even more than IQ, your emotional awareness and abilities to handle feelings will determine our success and happiness in all walks of life, including family relationships.”   (John Gottman)
