Learning from your mistakes is a widely acknowledged indication of wisdom, and is integral for being able to succeed in life.
In the compelling words of Abraham Lincoln, “I do not think much of a man who is not wiser today than he was yesterday.” Or put in a slightly different way, a person who does not learn from his or her mistakes is someone who is not growing in wisdom, and has not earned the recognition of being wise in their actions.
If you want to become wiser about achieving success in life, and if you don’t already do it, you need to learn to learn from your mistakes.
Getting Personal
Have you ever made the same mistake more than once? How did you feel after making the same mistake again? Why do you think you didn’t learn the first time after making the mistake?
Have you ever learned from making a mistake, and thereby avoided making the same mistake again? Give an example of a mistake you made, but avoided making again because you learned from it.
“The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.” (Henry Ford, American business leader)
“A man should never be ashamed to own he has been in the wrong, which is but saying… that he is wiser today than he was yesterday.” (Alexander Pope, 18th century English poet)
