Being Ambitious

Ambition is the desire to get ahead and do better

ambition
“Life takes on meaning when you become motivated, set goals and charge after them in an unstoppable manner.” (Les Brown)

Being ambitious expresses an underlying dynamic, that things can always be better than they are. It implies a desire to try to make things better, and a belief that making them better would be a good thing.

Underlying the dynamics of your ambition will be the following factors:

  • You know what the purpose of your life is, and your actions and goals are always aligned with this purpose, which is based on strong values.
  • You have a strong passion and motivation to achieve, and this supports an attitude of never being completely satisfied with your present situation. Therefore, you will find great resourcefulness to deal with any challenges, difficulties, or failures.
  • Being ambitious is a powerful quality, because by having this quality you are going to make it more likely that you will be successful in life.

Getting Personal

Do you consider yourself to be an ambitious person? Support your opinion with an example or two.

In general, are there any drawbacks to being ambitious? If so, what are they? Can you give an example?

“It is a grand thing to rise in the world. The ambition to do so is the very salt of the earth. It is the parent of all enterprise, and the cause of all improvement.” (Anthony Trollope, English novelist, 19th century)

“Ambition is enthusiasm with a purpose.” (Frank Tyger, American editorial cartoonist)
