Self-confidence is believing in your own capacities and abilities and having trust in your own judgment. It is also having the positive expectation that you can be successful. Self-confidence empowers you with initiative to take measures to achieve your personal and career goals and dreams.
Self-confidence can initiate a dynamic known as a “self-fulfilling prophecy.”
Your positive beliefs about yourself will lead to having positive expectations for yourself, and these positive expectations will encourage you to have self-confidence, which will enhance your ability to do your best.
However, this dynamic can also work in an opposite direction. Having negative expectations about yourself can undermine your self-confidence, which can prevent you from doing your best.
Getting Personal
Regarding your own feelings of self-confidence, have you ever been part a self-fulfilling prophecy that was the result of your possession of self-confidence or lack of it? Can you point to a specific example?
“The man who thinks he can and the one who thinks he can’t are both right. Which one are you? (Henry Ford, industrialist, founder of Ford Motor Co.)
“A bird sitting on a tree is never afraid of the branch breaking, because her trust is not on the branch but on it’s own wings. Always believe in yourself.” (Author Unknown)
