What is Courage?

“Courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” Nelson Mandela

The idea of courage is sometimes misunderstood.

It is not being fearless, but rather it is experiencing fear, being aware of it, and acting in a way that overcomes that feeling. Being afraid does not immobilize you nor prevent you from taking action, as you are able to do what you need or want to do, even in the face of fear.

Courage is primarily rooted in commitment, conviction, and resolve. It acknowledges danger and threat, and yet still allows you to move forward towards your goal or destination.

Courage is the invaluable quality you must try to develop and cultivate if you want to be able to consistently do the right thing and act virtuously.

“You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do.” (Eleanor Roosevelt, former First Lady of U.S., social activist)

“Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear.” (Ambrose Redmoon, American writer)

What would you do if you weren’t afraid?” (Spencer Johnson, American physician and author)

Getting Personal

Have you ever been afraid in a situation, but then managed to overcome this fear? When was that? How were you able to overcome your fear?

Have you ever been afraid in a situation, and you were unable to overcome your fear? What prevented you from overcoming your fear?
