The Reality of “Once- Only”

“A child asked a man to pick a flower for her. That was simple enough. But when she said, “Now put it back,” the man experienced a baffling helplessness he never knew before. How can you explain that it cannot be done?” he asked. How can you make clear that there are some things which, when broken, once mutilated, can never be replaced or mended?” (Marcia Borowsky)

Common sense teaches us to routinely take things for granted. Otherwise, we would become nervous wrecks, worrying about every little thing.

Wisdom, however, teaches us to understand and appreciate the “once-only” nature of many aspects of our lives, and to maintain a conscious awareness of this spiritual reality, and not to become complacent by taking things too much for granted.

The awareness of the “once-only” character of so many aspects of our lives adds richness, meaning, value, depth, and “wisdom” to so many of our life experiences; and vitally contributes to the heightened quality of our consciousness of life.

Getting Personal

Do you consider yourself to be a person who tends to take things for granted or one who has a lively sense of appreciation in life? From 1 to 10, 10 the highest, how would you rate yourself in terms of how appreciative you are? Think of an example to illustrate your own self-rating.

“… some decisions are irreversible. But like I’ve said, sometimes it’s the irreversible ones that help a person get to know herself a little better. It’s the consequences that matter. It’s the fact that there are no do-overs that makes life matter at all.” (Hannah Pittard, American Novelist)

“Finally, and most important, you only live once, so define what living once means to you and take control to create a life you’d want to read about.”  (Jason Vitug, American author)
