Being Humble

“I speak to everyone in the same way, whether he is the garbage man or the president of the university.” (Albert Einstein)

Having humility is often described as being humble. It is when you identify with others as an equal, despite having the opportunity to distance yourself because of your individual achievements and social statuses.

When you are humble you demonstrate a feeling of shared moral equivalency with others. Despite possible differences in achievement and social status, a humble person does not try to elevate himself above others and thereby to distance himself from them. The quality of being humble expresses a sense of moral identification and unity with others, despite possible material inequalities and imbalances of knowledge and power that may be present in their relationships.

Getting Personal

Is being humble an admirable quality? Why or why not?

In your own life, do you know any teachers, bosses, managers, or community leaders who lack humility? Why do you have this opinion of them?

“Be humble always and identify with the common man; even when success and achievements want to make you proud.”  (Bishop Leonard Umumna, Nigerian Bishop, author)

“Stay humble and never think that you are better than anyone else. We are all humans and crave acceptance and love.” (Unknown)

How humble are you? See for yourself.
