The Universe and Self-responsibility

Quote: universe not obligated
” A man said to the universe, “Sir, I exist.” “However, replied the universe, the fact has not created in me a sense of obligation.” Stephen Crane

When it comes to being successful in life, and achieving a high degree of self-fulfillment, the primary responsible agent is yourself.

Whether society and other individuals in your life may be encouraging, discouraging, or possibly indifferent about your development, it is you and your obligation to yourself that will be the main issue.

As a famous saying puts it, “The buck stops here.” Each person is responsible to his or her own self, and you can’t pass that responsibility off on to anyone else or to some outside source.

Getting Personal

Have you ever wanted to blame someone else for your problems, like on your parents, a teacher, or a friend? What would it look like to see the problem as your responsibility, and not theirs?

“The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves.” (William Shakespeare, English playwright)

“Remember always that you not only have the right to be an individual you have an obligation to be one.” (Eleanor Roosevelt, former First Lady of U.S.)

“Man is condemned to be free; because once thrown into the world, he is responsible for everything he does. It is up to you to give [life] a meaning.”  (Jean-Paul Sartre, French existential philosopher, and playwright)
