Avenues to Success

For threescore years I have been analyzing the causes of success and failure. Experience has taught me that financial success, job success, and happiness in human relations are, in the main, the result of a) physical well-being; b) constant effort to develop one’s personal assets; c) setting up and working toward a series of life goals; d) allowing time for meditation and spiritual regeneration.” (Roger W. Babson)

What makes for success in life?

After many years of extensive study, Roger Babson identified these four avenues to success:

  1. Maintaining physical health
  2. Pursuing personal development and improvement
  3. Engaging in purposeful, committed, and ethical efforts to achieve goals
  4. Making time for spiritual practices like self-reflection, meditation, mindfulness and prayer

As far as short summary statements about success go, we would be hard pressed to find another more succinctly comprehensive one than this.

Getting Personal

How would you rate yourself, overall, in terms of these avenues to success? Which ones would you consider the most important?

(Physical Well-being) “To get rich never risk your health. For it is the truth that health is the wealth of wealth.” (Richard Baker)

(Personal Development) “We can’t become what we need to be by remaining what we are.” (Oprah Winfrey)

(Achievement of Your Goals) “There are no secrets to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure.” (Colin Powell)

(Spiritual Development and Growth) “Bringing a spiritual dimension into all that we do is essential for ending the struggle and dancing with life. Our body and our minds can take us only so far, our spirit can lead us all the way home.” (Susan Jeffers)
